Ready to explore Tropea beaches like a local?
Are you curious about Tropea’s gorgeous beaches, and the many hidden beaches nearby, that only the locals know about? Then you’ve come to the right place.
In this blog post, I’ll take you on a tour of the best beaches in Tropea, share some insider tips, and reveal 5 fantastic hidden gems.
Nestled above the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the heart of Southern Italy, Tropea, in the region of Calabria, is a charming town that boasts a rich history and cultural significance.
Known as the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea,” Tropea has emerged as a popular travel destination for both beach lovers and history enthusiasts.
With its stunning coastline, known locally as ‘La Costa degli Dei‘, (‘The Coast of the Gods‘), this award winning seaside paradise offers more than just beautiful beaches.
Tropea is a must-visit destination for any traveller seeking an authentic Italian experience. As I’ve experienced during my many visits to Tropea, the genuinely lovely people of this town will welcome you with their charm.
One of Tropea’s most recognisable landmarks is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, perched on a rocky outcrop and once an island, hence the word ‘Isola’, (Island) in its name.
Dating back to the 11th century, it highlights the medieval architecture and historical significance of Tropea.
The Charm of Tropea’s Beaches
Tropea’s beaches are nothing short of enchanting. Picture glistening white sands stretching along the coastline, framed by rugged cliffs and lapped by the gentle waves of the glittering blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The blue water of the sea here is so clear and inviting; possibly the most beautiful that I have come across in Italy.
One of the most striking features of Tropea’s gorgeous beaches is the sheer cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea.
Whether you’re sunbathing, swimming in the azure waters or taking an evening stroll at sunset, you’ll be surrounded by the natural beauty that makes Tropea and its beautiful beaches so special.
Additionally, the beautiful beaches of Capo Vaticano are also nearby and are renowned as a prime destination for beachgoers, offering some of the most beautiful and less crowded options in Calabria.
So…here they are, the Best Beaches in and around Tropea.
The 15 Best Beaches in Tropea
1. Spiaggia della Rotonda
Spiaggia della Rotonda is one of Tropea’s most popular beaches in Tropea, and for good reason.
As with all the main Tropea beaches, access is by taking a charming stone staircase that starts next to Piazza Cannone, leading you down the steep cliffs to the beaches below.
On the way down you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and even though there are quite a few steps, the walk down is fairly easy.
Walking back up at the end of your day on the beach, possibly after an early aperitivo, could be a bit different though.
Located right in the heart of the town shown here, Spiaggia della Rotonda offers easy access by car or foot and stunning views of the Santa Maria dell’Isola monastery.
It is a free beach, meaning that you can plonk yourself down on your towel, anywhere you like.
The crystal-clear waters and soft sands make it a perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. Don’t forget to bring your camera—this location is incredibly photogenic!
2. Spiaggia Mare Piccolo
For a more secluded experience, make your way to Spiaggia Mare Piccolo, which is right next to Rotonda.
This is also one of the free Tropea beaches, and has a cute kiosk, where you can order snacks, drinks, ice cream and espresso coffee!
This small but beautiful beach is located just below the historic centre of Tropea shown here, and can also be accessed by the stairs down from Piazza Canone.
3. Spiaggia del Cannone
Spiaggia Cannone (which takes its name from the discovery of a seventeenth-century cannon) is also known as (“U Cannuni“) in the local dialect. It is a small, intimate beach located here, a short walk from the historic centre of Tropea.
It can be accessed by the stairs descending from the small lookout, at the seaside end of Largo Galluppi in the old town, then walking towards the Tropea Harbour entrance.
It can be a little hard to find but just ask any local or fisherman nearby. This spot is perfect for a quiet day by the sea, away from the hustle and bustle.
It is mainly frequented by the locals and even though quite small it doesn’t seem to get overly crowded. Late July and August is another story though, so avoid these months if you can.
4. Spiaggia A Linguata
NOTE: Due to part of the promontory cliff collapsing last year, potentially with the risk of future instability around the Island, it has been advised by The Authorities to avoid those areas. They are best viewed from a boat or from the sea.
Though not exactly a large area of beach, Spiaggia A Linguata, located here, is known for its serene and chilled-out atmosphere and is one of the fantastic beaches in the region.
Linguata comes from the word ‘Tongue’ in Italian, as this stretch of beach is quite narrow and long.
It is a perfect spot for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful day by the sea. The surrounding cliffs add to its secluded charm, making it a favourite among solitude seekers.
5. Grotta del Palombaro
Located just a short boat ride away from Tropea’s gorgeous beaches, Grotta del Palombaro is a must-visit beach for those seeking adventure.
This hidden gem, located here, can only be accessed by sea and offers stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and turquoise waters.
Don’t forget to pack your snorkelling gear—this beach is known for its vibrant marine life.

For those seeking a more secluded experience, Spiaggia Michelino is one of Tropea’s lesser-known beach treasures.
On descending the steps to sea level, to your left will be the beach officially known as Spiaggia Parghelia, and to your right, Spiaggia Michelino is located here. If asking for directions, only refer to Michelino.
Tucked away behind a cliff, these beaches offer a sense of tranquillity that’s hard to find elsewhere.
The hike down to the beach is a bit challenging, but the reward is well worth it. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by pristine sands and clear, calm waters perfect for a dip.
